EPFO New Rules: Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has made an important change regarding Universal Account Number (UAN). EPFO has decided that from August 1, 2025, new UAN will now be generated or allotted only through Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT) through UMANG app. This decision has been taken so that the process of UAN generation is completely error-free, automated and reliable.
What is UAN and why is it important?
EPFO allots UAN i.e. Universal Account Number. This number is given to every employee who works in an institution under the Employees’ Provident Fund Scheme, 1952. UAN works as the identity of the employees. Whenever the employee changes jobs, the Member IDs given by the new employers get linked to the same UAN. Since this UAN remains valid for the entire career of the individual, it is extremely important to generate it accurately and securely.
How was UAN generated till now?
Till now, employees had to either apply through their employer or use other digital means to obtain UAN. But many times, problems like data entry errors, identity errors or delay in document verification arose. To eliminate these reasons, EPFO has decided to implement a full-proof digital system.
What is the new system of EPFO?
EPFO has decided that now the new UAN will be generated only through UMANG app and for this, face authentication technology (FAT) linked to Aadhaar card will be used. In this process, the member has to install UMANG app and Aadhaar Face RD App on his smartphone. After this, your identity will be verified with UIDAI (Aadhaar database) through face scan on the app and UAN will be generated.
EPFO said in a circular issued on 30 July 2025, “To ensure error-free generation of UAN, it has been decided that from August 1, 2025, new UAN will be generated / allotted only through Aadhaar-based face authentication in UMANG app.”
For whom will the old process remain?
EPFO has also clarified that for some exceptions, the currently prevalent process i.e. the facility to generate UAN through employers will remain. Such as international workers and citizens of Nepal and Bhutan.
FAT facility was started in April 2025
Earlier, EPFO started the use of face authentication technology on 8 April 2025. Then EPFO added 3 major features to the UMANG app:
- Employees starting a new job can generate and activate UAN directly from the app.
- People who already have UAN can activate it from the app.
- Services can be accessed through face authentication for already activated UAN.
- EPFO had also informed that there will be no need to contact any EPFO office or employer to avail these facilities. Members can complete this process themselves from their smartphone.
What will be the benefits of the new system?
According to EPFO, this digital change will have many benefits. This will facilitate the PF member. Also, the work of EPFO will also become easier.
- UAN generation and activation will happen simultaneously, there will be no need for separate processes.
- All data will be filled directly from UIDAI, which will eliminate the possibility of incorrect information.
- There will be no need for any manual verification or document upload.
Once UAN is generated, members will be able to download the PDF of e-UAN card, which they can give to their employer to start the PF process. Immediately after activation, the member will get access to EPFO services like viewing passbook, updating KYC, submitting claim.
