Farooq Abdullah Firing: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) President Farooq Abdullah was shot by a man named Kamal Singh Jamwal on Wednesday night (March 11). Farooq Abdullah was accompanied by Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary. Both miraculously survived the shooting. The accused has been arrested. The incident occurred while Abdullah and Choudhary were attending a wedding function at Royal Park in Greater Kailash, Jammu.

Sources said that Kamal Singh, the accused arrested for attempting to shoot the former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, claimed during police interrogation that he had been planning to kill Farooq Abdullah for the past two decades. Kamal Singh, a resident of Purani Mandi, Jammu, said during police interrogation, “I have been wanting to kill Farooq Abdullah for the past 20 years. This was my sole purpose. Today, I finally got the chance. But it couldn’t happen.”

Singh, a 63-year-old resident of Jammu, reportedly attacked the NC chief with his licensed gun. He said the weapon he used in the attack belonged to him. Sources say the accused owns several shops in the old part of Jammu. He earns his living by renting out his shops.

After the failed attempt on the NC chief’s life, he told the police, “Today I got a chance, but he (Farooq Abdullah) was lucky to survive.” The accused was reportedly drunk during the attack. Security guards apprehended him after he attempted to assassinate the former J&K Chief Minister.

J&K Police said in a statement, “J&K National Conference Party President/Former Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah was attacked while he was attending a wedding at Royal Park, Greater Kailash, Jammu. J&K Police and NSG security personnel immediately swung into action and foiled the attack. The accused, identified as Kamal Singh, son of Ajit Singh, resident of Purani Mandi, Jammu, has been taken into custody. The weapon used in the crime has also been recovered from the accused. Action has been taken. Further investigation is underway.”

According to officials, Farooq Abdullah and Chaudhary had gone to congratulate National Conference leader BS Chauhan on his daughter’s wedding. They were present at the venue for over an hour. Expressing grief over the incident, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Farooq Abdullah’s son, Omar Abdullah, thanked Allah for saving his father’s life. He questioned the security personnel, asking how a man with a loaded pistol came so close to him and fired at the NC chief.

Omar Abdullah tweeted, “God is gracious. My father had a narrow escape. The details are still unclear, but what is known is that a man with a loaded pistol came at point-blank range and opened fire. Only the close protection team deflected the bullet, ensuring the assassination attempt was foiled. At this point, there are more questions than answers, including how someone managed to get so close to the Z+ NSG-protected former Chief Minister.”

BJP leader Ravinder Raina said, “A shooting incident has occurred at a wedding ceremony in Jammu city late last night. This is a very worrying and serious matter. Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Dr. Farooq Abdullah Sahib, was also present at the wedding ceremony. The person who fired the shot has been arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir Police. All security agencies and the Jammu and Kashmir Police are investigating.”

He further said, “Security agencies are investigating all the angles layer by layer. However, senior officials of Jammu and Kashmir Police believe that there is no conspiracy of any kind of terrorist incident in this shooting incident. Still, all the angles are being investigated… Thank God that all those who attended the wedding ceremony, including Farooq Abdullah, are safe.”
