FASTag: In a major decision, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has eliminated the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process required after purchasing a FASTag. All FASTags issued from February 1, 2026, will no longer require a KYV. This will eliminate the hassles and delays associated with KYV registration.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said in a statement that this reform will provide significant relief to millions of road users who, despite having valid vehicle documents, faced inconvenience and delays due to the KYV process after FASTag activation.

It further stated that KYV will no longer be routinely mandatory for FASTags already issued to cars. The authority stated that KYV will only be required in cases where complaints are received, such as issues related to loose FASTags, incorrect issuance, or misuse.

In the absence of complaints, KYV will no longer be required for existing car FASTags.

NHAI said it has further strengthened the pre-activation verification norms for issuing banks by implementing VAHAN-based mandatory verification for FASTag activation.

NHAI has introduced “robust pre-activation security measures,” which are as follows:

Mandatory VAHAN-based verification: FASTags will be activated only if the vehicle details are verified as per the VAHAN database.

No post-activation verification: There will be no additional verification after activation.

RC-based verification only in special cases: If the vehicle details are not available in the VAHAN database, issuing banks will be required to verify the details based on the Registration Certificate (RC) before FASTag activation.

Online FASTags included: FASTags sold through online channels will be activated only after complete verification by the bank.
