Filing ITR: Even if you miss the deadline, you can file ITR by December 31 like this

CBDT has once again extended the last date for filing income tax returns. In such a situation, even if you miss that date, there is still an option to file returns after that.

The Income Tax Department has once again extended the date for filing ITR for the financial year 2024-25. Earlier this date was 31 July 2025, which was extended to 15 September 2025. But now the CBDT has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns by one more day. But do you know that you can file income tax till 31 December?

Taxpayers filing income tax were constantly complaining about the slow running of the website. Many firms had reported problems in downloading the form, keeping this in mind, the tax department has extended the ITR deadline from 15 September to 16 September 2025. However, if for some reason you are unable to file ITR even by the 16th, then you do not need to worry. ITR can be filed till 31 December 2025 with late payment.

Meaning of late filing

Late filing i.e. belated return is the income tax return which is not filed on or before the due date. According to the income tax website, if a person does not file the return by the due date or the deadline given in the notice, then he can file the return of the previous year 3 months before the end of the assessment year or before the completion of the assessment, whichever is earlier.

How much will be the penalty?

If you file the return after the due date, then you will have to pay a late fee under section 234F. For most taxpayers, this fee is Rs 5,000. But if your total income is up to Rs 5 lakh, then the fee will be only Rs 1,000. According to section 234F, if the return is filed after the due date under section 139(1), then a late fee of Rs 5,000 will have to be paid. Otherwise, if the income is high, then the fee is charged.
