IndiGo Flight Cancellations Updates: The country’s largest airline, IndiGo, which has been grappling with operational woes for the past 10 days, has announced compensation for passengers severely affected by flight cancellations. Crisis-hit IndiGo announced on Thursday (December 11) that passengers whose flights were canceled or whose travel was significantly delayed between December 3rd and 5th will receive ₹10,000 as compensation. The airline will also provide travel vouchers worth ₹10,000 to customers who were stranded for hours amid airport congestion due to the pilot and crew shortage.

However, IndiGo has stated that these vouchers will only be given to passengers affected by flight cancellations between December 3rd and 5th. IndiGo’s recent operational crisis has left thousands of passengers in distress. This compensation will be in addition to the amount already paid to passengers for flight cancellations under Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) norms.

In a statement, IndiGo regretted that some of its customers traveling on December 3, 4, and 5 were stranded at some airports for several hours. Many of them were severely affected by the congestion. “We will provide travel vouchers worth Rs 10,000 to such severely affected customers. These travel vouchers can be used for any IndiGo travel during the next 12 months,” the statement added.

The country’s largest airline is also facing regulatory pressure. Authorities have directed it to cut winter flights by 10 percent to stabilize operations. IndiGo was operating approximately 2,300 flights daily before the disruption began on December 2.

“This voucher is in addition to the commitment made under existing government guidelines. According to this, IndiGo will provide compensation ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000, depending on the block time, to customers whose flights were cancelled within 24 hours of the scheduled departure time,” the statement said.

It plans to operate over 1,950 flights today.

Troubled IndiGo also cancelled 60 flights from Bengaluru airport on Thursday. The cancellations come as the airline announced plans to operate over 1,950 flights today under the supervision of aviation safety regulator DGCA, following widespread disruptions to services due to planning failures related to the implementation of new pilot and crew duty hours.

“IndiGo has cancelled 60 flights, including 10 arrivals and 28 departures, from Bengaluru airport,” the source said. Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has summoned crisis-hit IndiGo’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Pieter Elbers, on Thursday to submit a comprehensive report, including data and updates, on the recent operational disruptions.

The airline said in a statement that it expects to operate over 1,950 flights on Thursday, December 11. The airline operates over 2,200 flights daily under its winter schedule on its national and domestic network. However, this has already been reduced by 10 percent by the government to help the airline stabilize its operations and reduce the number of flight cancellations, which had reached 1,600 on December 5.

On Wednesday, IndiGo canceled 220 flights from three major airports, including Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai. Delhi saw the highest number of cancellations, with 137. IndiGo Chairman Vikram Mehta spoke about the crisis for the first time in 10 days on Wednesday. Mehta apologized for the chaos at the airport and attributed the widespread disruptions to a combination of internal and external unforeseen events.
