Flight Ticket Refund Rules: According to the new DGCA rule, starting March 26, 2026, passengers will be able to cancel or change their tickets within 48 hours of booking without incurring any cancellation charges. This facility will only apply to domestic and international flights with travel dates that differ by at least 7 and 15 days, respectively.
Flight Ticket Refund Rules: It’s often seen that passengers have to pay hefty cancellation charges when their air travel plans change unexpectedly. Sometimes, the refund amount is so small that the passenger suffers significant financial loss. But this will no longer be the case. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has made a historic change to the rules to protect the interests of passengers, introducing the “48-hour look-in option.”
What is the new “look-in option”?
Under the new rules, if you book a flight ticket and wish to cancel or change it within the next 48 hours, the airline will not be able to charge you any cancellation fees. This rule provides passengers with a window of sorts so they can change their travel plans without fear. However, it’s important to note that after 48 hours, the old standard rules will apply.
It’s important to know these terms and conditions.
As great as this feature sounds, it also comes with some important conditions that must be met:
1. Booking Time: For domestic flights, your travel date must be at least 7 days after the booking date. For international flights, this time limit is 15 days.
2. Direct Booking: This ‘free cancellation’ benefit is only available if you book directly from the airline’s official website. Bookings made through third-party apps or agents may be subject to the respective portal’s own terms and conditions.
3. Fare Difference: If you change your ticket instead of canceling it, you won’t be charged a change fee. However, if the new flight fare is higher than the old one, you will have to pay that additional fare.
No more waiting for weeks for a refund
The DGCA has also streamlined and streamlined the refund process. Passengers often complained that airlines would issue “future vouchers” instead of refunds. This will no longer be the case:
* Credit card payments: Refunds must be made within 7 working days of ticket cancellation.
* Agent/portal bookings: Even if the ticket was booked through an agent, the airline must process the refund within 14 days.
* Cash payments: Refunds for tickets purchased in cash can be obtained immediately at the airline counter.
When will this rule come into effect?
This new DGCA regulation will take effect on March 26, 2026. The regulator believes this step has become necessary due to increasing complaints regarding delayed refunds and arbitrary cancellation charges. Now, passengers will not only be less worried about being fleeced, but their air travel experience will also become more reliable.
