Flights Cancelled: Airlines in the US canceled more than 1,000 flights on Friday (December 26), despite the Christmas holiday, as severe storm warnings and heavy snowfall were forecast across much of the country. New York, the nation’s largest city, is expected to receive up to 10 inches of snow overnight, with temperatures likely to drop below freezing.
New York is the worst hit
According to the FlightAware website, at least 1,191 flights were canceled and 3,974 delayed as of 1:00 pm on Friday. New York’s three major airports, LaGuardia, JFK, and Newark, saw the most flight cancellations. Passengers at Boston and Detroit airports are also experiencing significant disruption. The National Weather Service (NWS) has predicted snowfall in the upper Great Lakes region, and the storm’s center is moving northeast.
According to a report by AFP, a warning has been issued for travelers returning from vacations in the United States regarding dangerous road conditions. New York Mayor Eric Adams said a winter storm warning has been issued and city workers have been deployed to clear snow from the roads.
Travellers advised to remain alert
American airlines have advised passengers to remain alert on social media platforms. Airlines recommend passengers check the status before arriving at the airport to catch their flights. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a clear warning that conditions have become extremely dangerous from the Great Lakes to New England.
On FlightAware’s Misery Map, airports in New York, along with New York City, are at the top, showing flight delays and cancellations. According to the website, approximately 785 flights have been canceled at New York-area airports following the warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS).
