Flights Cancelled: IndiGo has made this decision, prioritizing the safety of passengers and crew. Previously, Air India had also discontinued this route.
Flights Cancelled: India’s largest airline, IndiGo, announced on Monday that due to the regional situation in and around Iran, all flights to and from Tbilisi (Georgia), Almaty (Kazakhstan), Baku (Azerbaijan), and Tashkent (Uzbekistan) will be cancelled until March 28, 2026. This decision is an extension of the earlier announcement (which was until February 28). The airline, in a post on X, clarified that flights to these cities are affected due to the ongoing developments in the airspace in and around Iran. The previously announced cancellations have now been extended until March 28, 2026. The airline said that the safety of passengers and crew is our top priority. We are continuously monitoring the situation and reviewing the schedule to minimize inconvenience to passengers.
Main Reasons for Avoiding Iranian Airspace
Both IndiGo and Air India have completely stopped using Iranian airspace. Flights to these cities normally fly over Iran, but rising US-Iran tensions and fears of a potential military conflict have prompted airlines to adopt alternative (longer) routes. Several international agencies, including the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), are advising against flying over Iranian airspace. This is increasing flight times, fuel consumption, and increasing operational challenges.
Changes to Dreamliner (787-9) flights also
In addition to the Iran tensions, geopolitical restrictions, airspace closures, airport congestion, and increased flight times have increased pressure on IndiGo’s wide-body fleet. As a result, flights to Copenhagen have been temporarily suspended from February 17, 2026. Weekly flights on the Delhi-London Heathrow route have been reduced from five to four (from February 9).
Frequency on Delhi-Manchester is also being reduced – first from five to four (from February 7), then to three weekly (from February 19). IndiGo stated that these changes are to ensure operational reliability and on-time arrivals.
Advice to Explore Options
A full refund or alternative flight options are available to affected passengers. IndiGo has advised passengers to explore options by visiting the IndiGo website (goindigo.in/plan-b). The airline reiterated that the safety of passengers and crew is of paramount importance. Necessary steps will continue to be taken until the situation normalises. Travelling passengers are advised to check their flight status on the IndiGo app/website or directly with the airline.
