Forex Rule Change: The Reserve Bank of India has introduced a major change to its regulations. Now, Indian and foreign travelers can easily procure foreign currency at international airports even before boarding their flights. To facilitate this, the RBI has made forex counters available within the departure areas. Previously, this facility was limited.
Forex Rule Change: The Reserve Bank of India has taken a major decision. It has now permitted the exchange of Indian Rupees at foreign exchange counters located in the departure areas of international airports. Previously, foreign exchange counters within the airport’s departure hall—specifically the area situated beyond Immigration and Customs—had limited operational scope. These counters were restricted to purchasing Indian Rupees solely from non-residents and selling foreign currency to them.
Indian travelers (residents) were unable to exchange their Rupees at these locations. If a traveler forgot to exchange their currency prior to check-in, or if they discovered surplus cash in their pockets following the security screening, they were left with no viable options. Consequently, travelers often ended up carrying unexchanged Rupees abroad or were forced to let the currency remain unused.
Exchange Currency Before Catching Your Flight
The RBI has amended this rule. Now, whether they are Indian residents or foreign nationals, both groups can exchange their rupees at the forex counters located within the departure areas of international airports. This facility is also available in the zone situated *after* clearing immigration or customs checks—meaning you can exchange your rupees right before boarding your flight.
In a circular, the RBI has stated that, following a review of the regulations, a decision has now been taken to permit Indian residents—alongside non-residents—to exchange Indian Rupee notes at foreign exchange counters located within the duty-free or security hold areas of international airports. This means that passengers will now be able to conveniently exchange their Rupees even in the areas situated beyond the immigration or customs checkpoints.
This Facility Will Be Available Here
According to media reports, the new rules will apply only to the duty-free and security hold areas of international airports. This refers to the section located after immigration—an area where people typically shop, eat or drink, or wait before their flight.
