Shubman Gill faced just three balls in the first innings of the Kolkata Test when he suffered a neck injury and was taken to the hospital. Gill did not return to the field. His participation in the second Test in Guwahati is now considered doubtful.
Regular Indian Test captain Shubman Gill will not be seen playing in the second Test against South Africa. Sources within the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) have confirmed that he will not travel with the team to Guwahati on Wednesday. The team will have an optional practice session on Tuesday.
A source said, “He is suffering from severe neck pain and we are not allowed to share more details about the injury. He has been advised to wear a neck collar continuously.” He further said, “He has been advised rest for three-four days and not to travel by air. In such a situation, it is not advisable to travel to Guwahati. However, we are monitoring his condition daily and the picture will be clearer by Tuesday.”
The second Test begins on Saturday.
The Indian team will depart for Guwahati on Wednesday, where the second and final Test will be played on Saturday. Head coach Gautam Gambhir stated in the post-match press conference that Gill’s condition is still being assessed and will be further evaluated by the physio and medical staff. Gill’s absence in the fourth innings left India one batsman short, and the team lost by 30 runs while chasing a target of 124. If Gill is out, India has options like Sai Sudarshan and Devdutt Padikkal available.
Got to hospital on the second day of the Kolkata Test
Gill was taken to the hospital on the second day of the Kolkata Test. He did not participate further after retiring hurt for four runs after playing just three balls in India’s first innings. On the morning of the third day, the BCCI confirmed that he would not play in the match. He was discharged from the hospital on Sunday evening.
Gill previously missed a Test against New Zealand in October 2024 due to neck spasms. His injury comes at a time when the team management is closely monitoring his workload. The India captain has been playing consistently across all formats since the IPL 2025 and joined the Indian squad along with four other Test regulars just two days after the final T20 in Brisbane.
