Google has launched Emergency Location Service (ELS) in India for Android phone users. Significantly, Uttar Pradesh became the first state to launch this service. The 112 emergency service now integrates accurate location information. This is because in emergencies, such as a dangerous situation, an injury, an accident, or panic, people often struggle to provide their exact location. This new service from Google will be extremely useful in such situations. So, let’s understand what it is and how it works.

What is Emergency Location Service?

Google has just launched this service for Android phones running Android 6.0 or higher. There’s no need to download a separate app for this service; it’s a built-in feature of Android phones. By dialing or texting 112, you can send a notification about your exact location to the fire brigade, ambulance, and police.

What do you need to do to activate Emergency Location Service?

Android users won’t need to download a separate app for this; it’s already available. This will be a huge benefit to users.

Why did Google choose Uttar Pradesh?

This service was first launched in India in Uttar Pradesh. The Uttar Pradesh Police, along with local technology partners, have begun work on the 112 emergency system. Initially, it was launched as a pilot project. Google has stated that this has only been implemented in Uttar Pradesh, but will soon be expanded to other states.

Features of the Emergency Location Service

This feature uses mobile networks, GPS, and Wi-Fi to determine the caller’s exact location within a 50-meter radius.

The important thing is that this feature is only active during emergency calls, ensuring user privacy.

Moreover, users’ locations are not stored by Google; they are transmitted directly to emergency services.

In case of any emergency, users can make an emergency call and receive immediate help through Google’s new Emergency Location Service.
