The government will soon implement a new graded point system for driving licenses. Under this system, points will be deducted from a license for every traffic violation. If a violation exceeds a certain limit, the license may be suspended for six months, or if repeated, it may be permanently revoked. Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the implementation of the graded point system for driving licenses at the Third National Conclave on Road Safety, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
Graded Point System to be Implemented on Driving Licenses
Approximately 500,000 road accidents occur in India every year, resulting in the death of over 1.8 lakh people. The government’s goal is to reduce these accidents. Under the graded point system, points will be deducted for every violation, and after a certain limit, the license will be suspended. Furthermore, repeated violations can also result in license cancellation. The purpose of this new rule is to motivate people to follow traffic rules.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has identified 100 districts with a high incidence of road accidents. Black spots have been identified, and special plans will be developed for improvement. The government has also stated that states and districts that consistently report high accident rates may be publicly listed. Additionally, 350 landslide-prone areas have been identified in the Himalayan region. Of these, 235 will receive priority repair work to reduce accidents.
Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari stated that up to 50% of lives can be saved if accident victims are taken to the hospital within the golden hour, i.e., within the first hour. Therefore, 400 high-tech ambulances will be deployed on national highways, aiming to reach the accident site within 20 minutes.
