The sound of the wedding bells came to a halt in Bareilly on Friday when the groom’s family demanded 20 lakh rupees in cash and a car just before the wedding rituals. This film-style demand had a very dramatic outcome. The girl not only refused to marry him, but also sent the groom on a tour of his real in-laws’ home: jail.
A house in Bareilly, once filled with joy and the hustle and bustle of a wedding, is now filled with silence. On Friday, preparations were underway for a daughter’s wedding. The bride was dressed, the wedding procession arrived, and the groom arrived at the wedding venue. Everything was normal, as usual at weddings. But what followed was nothing short of a scene from a 90s film. Just before the wedding rituals, the groom’s family demanded a hefty dowry, which the bride’s family was unable to meet. They threatened to return if the wedding procession wasn’t met.
The groom demanded 20 lakh rupees in cash.
Jyoti, daughter of Murli Manohar, a resident of Sadar Bazaar in Bareilly’s Cantt police station area, was engaged about eight months ago to Rishabh, son of Ram Avtar, a resident of Naya Basti, Prem Nagar. The wedding was scheduled for Friday. The wedding procession arrived, and preparations for the wedding began. Even before this, the groom had demanded Rs 20 lakh in cash and a Brezza car.
The engagement took place in a large hotel.
Before the wedding, the bride’s family held a lavish engagement ceremony in May at a prominent and prestigious hotel in the city. The groom was given a gold ring, a chain, and 5 lakh rupees in cash. The event also cost approximately 3 lakh rupees.
The bride turned away her wedding procession after her mother demanded dowry.
There was commotion in the wedding atmosphere after the groom demanded dowry. The girl’s family expressed their inability to fulfill such a huge demand. But the groom’s side was not ready to listen. Seeing that the matter was not getting resolved, the police was informed late at night. The police reached the spot and took the groom Rishabh, his father Ram Avtar and brother-in-law into custody. The girl’s side said that the wedding also cost around Rs 15 lakh. As a ritual, gold chain, ring and cash were given to the groom and his family members in the wedding procession. The police have registered a case on the basis of the complaint.
Is the matter about dowry or body shaming?
The groom recently addressed the issue. He stated that this is not a case of dowry, but rather body shaming. Rishabh posted a video on social media, in which he cited his weight as the reason for the wedding cancellation. Rishabh said, “I weigh over a quintal, so the bride refused to marry me.”
