Due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, India has been able to supplement its crude oil supply to some extent from other sources, such as Russia and West Africa. However, importing oil from outside the Middle East is more expensive due to higher freight and insurance costs.
Prices have risen before
Amid supply disruptions, the government has increased the prices of both domestic and commercial LPG cylinders. In early March, the price of a 14.2-kilogram domestic cooking gas cylinder increased by ₹60 in major cities, while the price of a 19-kilogram commercial cylinder increased by ₹144.
Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, oil prices rose by more than 5% and crossed $108 per barrel in international markets today.
