Hydrogen Train: India is set to begin the year 2026 with a historic technological achievement. Indian Railways’ first hydrogen-powered train is now close to entering service. Trials will be conducted between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana. This environmentally friendly train could emerge as an alternative to diesel engines and is considered a major step towards green transportation for India.

First Trial to be Held on Jind-Sonipat Route

Indian Railways has completed preparations for the trial run of the country’s first hydrogen train. This trial is expected to begin on January 26, 2026, on the 90-kilometer Jind-Sonipat route. The train will consist of two driver-powered cars and eight passenger coaches. After the trials are completed, a joint report by the Railways, RDSO, and the Spanish partner company, Green H, will be submitted to the central government, based on which further decisions will be made.

The Power of Green Fuel with Speed

This hydrogen-powered train is not only fast but also extremely environmentally friendly. Its maximum speed is set at 150 kilometers per hour. Remarkably, using new electrochemical technology, approximately 900 grams of hydrogen is produced from 9 kilograms of water, which is capable of powering the train for one kilometer. The train has the capacity to store 3,000 kilograms of hydrogen and 7,680 kilograms of oxygen.

The country’s largest hydrogen plant

India’s largest hydrogen production plant has been established in Jind, developed in collaboration with a Spanish company. The plant is fully operational and equipped with a 1.5 megawatt power supply, ensuring continuous hydrogen production. This plant will not only provide the fuel needed for train operations but will also set an example for other green projects in the future.

Advanced Coaches and Technology

The hydrogen train coaches were manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. The coaches have arrived at Shakurbasti Railway Station and will be inducted in a phased manner. The train has dual power driver power cars at both the front and rear, each powered by a 1200 horsepower engine. The fuel cell generates 3750 amperes of DC current, which powers the AC, lights, fans, and other amenities. The train also features modern features such as automatic doors and digital displays.

The train will become a new model of green technology.

Dr. Krishna Middha, Deputy Speaker of the Haryana Legislative Assembly and MLA from Jind, described this project as a matter of pride for Jind. He said that the construction of the country’s largest hydrogen plant in Jind is a major achievement not only for Haryana but for the entire country. This train can set a new standard for environmental protection, energy conservation, and clean transportation in the future. The hydrogen train is considered the foundation of Indian Railways’ future green infrastructure.
