IMD Alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather bulletin warning of a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal. The weather agency has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore districts, and Puducherry and the Karaikal region on Saturday.

The weather agency has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Cuddalore districts, and the Puducherry and Karaikal regions on Saturday.
The IMD stated that this weather system is likely to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Tamil Nadu on January 10 and heavy rainfall at isolated places in the same region on January 11.
Chennai on IMD Yellow Alert
The Meteorological Department has also issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, and Ramanathapuram districts of Tamil Nadu. Additionally, a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning has been issued for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal region today.
The maximum and minimum temperatures in Chennai are expected to be 27 to 28 degrees Celsius and 24 degrees Celsius, respectively. The Meteorological Department has forecast “generally cloudy sky” and moderate to heavy rain with thunderstorms and lightning in some areas.
According to the latest information, the centre of the deep depression is located “near latitude 8.5°N and longitude 82.2°E, about 100 km north-northeast of Batticaloa (Sri Lanka), 100 km east of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 180 km north-northeast of Pottuvil (Sri Lanka), 370 km southeast of Karaikal (Puducherry) and 550 km south-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu).”
The IMD has issued a warning for strong sea waves and surface winds.
Under the influence of current atmospheric conditions, strong surface winds with a speed of about 35-45 kmph are expected over coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. The Meteorological Department has forecast that the deep depression will weaken into a depression as it moves northwestward. This depression is expected to cross the coast of northern Sri Lanka between Trincomalee and Jaffna around noon or evening today.
The Meteorological Department has warned that “stormy winds with a speed of 40-50 kmph and gusting up to 60 kmph are likely to occur till the evening of January 10. Thereafter, the wind speed will gradually decrease. On January 10, stormy winds with a speed of 35-45 kmph and gusting up to 55 kmph are likely to occur along the coasts of North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, which will decrease later.”
Furthermore, a warning has been issued for fishermen on Saturday in the Gulf of Mannar and the adjoining Comorin area, and along the coasts of Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu-Puducherry.
