Most parts of the country are currently experiencing severe cold. Ongoing snowfall in the hilly areas has further exacerbated the chill. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted dense to very dense morning fog in northwest India and Bihar for the next few days. Additionally, a cold day alert has been issued for several states today.

According to the Meteorological Department, a cold day warning has been issued for various areas of Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, eastern Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar. A cold wave is also expected in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Odisha.

Where is rain expected?

A deep depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean is expected to worsen the weather in South India. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in Tamil Nadu on January 9th and 10th. Heavy rain is also expected in Kerala on January 10th.

Delhi Weather

Cold weather continues to wreak havoc in the capital, Delhi. On Thursday (January 8th), the season’s third-lowest minimum temperature of 5.8 degrees Celsius was recorded. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for dense fog for Friday, with a minimum temperature of around 6 degrees Celsius and a maximum temperature of around 17 degrees Celsius.

Severe Cold in Uttar Pradesh

People in Uttar Pradesh are experiencing severe cold due to the cold wave. The Meteorological Department has predicted a cold day in the state today, Friday. Fog may cause poor visibility in the capital, Lucknow, and surrounding districts. Light sunshine is expected in many places by afternoon. Pollution hasn’t eased in many areas adjacent to Delhi. On Thursday, the AQI in Ghaziabad and Noida hovered around 300.

Schools Closed in Bihar

Westerly winds have intensified the cold in Bihar. In the capital, Patna, District Magistrate Dr. Tyagarajan SM has banned educational activities up to grade 8 in all private and government schools (including preschools and Anganwadi centers) in the district until January 11 due to the cold. The timings for classes above grade 8 have been set between 10:30 am and 3:30 pm.
