IMD Cold Wave Warning: These states may experience severe cold till January 9, IMD issues alert

IMD Cold Wave Warning: According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), severe cold is likely to continue in Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, and other northern and central Indian states until at least January 9. The weather agency has predicted a gradual drop of 2-3 degrees Celsius in minimum temperatures in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi over the next two days, with no significant change expected thereafter for the next five days.

IMD Cold Wave Warning

The IMD has predicted severe cold in some areas of Rajasthan on January 7. The weather agency has said that there is a strong possibility of cold wave in some areas of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi until January 9, in Rajasthan until January 11, and in Chhattisgarh until January 8.

The IMD tweeted, “There is a strong possibility of a cold wave in Odisha from January 7 to 9, 2026, in Madhya Pradesh from January 7 and 8, and in Vidarbha and Jharkhand from January 6 to 8.”

The IMD has issued a cold wave alert for Jharkhand until January 7. According to a PTI report, a ‘yellow’ alert has been issued for Garhwa, Palamu, Latehar, Lohardaga, Gumla, and Chatra districts.

In Tripura, the IMD Agartala has predicted a drop in minimum temperatures over the next three to five days and issued a fog warning. According to ANI, the Tripura government has ordered the closure of schools in the state from January 6 to 10 due to extreme cold.

The weather agency said that the cold wave will intensify in southern West Bengal over the next two days. A PTI report, quoting the IMD, said that the cold wave is likely to intensify in the southern districts of the state, with the mercury dropping by another 2 degrees Celsius on Wednesday and Thursday.

The IMD has also predicted frost in some areas of Uttarakhand until January 7.

IMD issues fog warning

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of dense to very dense fog in some areas in the morning hours in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh until January 10, and in eastern Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh until January 8.

The IMD has also said that dense fog is likely in the morning hours over Uttarakhand and Rajasthan till January 8, over western Uttar Pradesh till January 9, over Himachal Pradesh till January 10, over eastern Uttar Pradesh from January 9 to 12, over Chhattisgarh, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Odisha till January 7 and over Bihar till January 12.

In the Northeast, dense fog conditions are likely to prevail in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura till January 10.
