The Meteorological Department said that the low pressure area formed yesterday over the equatorial Indian Ocean and the adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal remained in the same area till 8:30 am on Thursday.
IMD Rain Alert: The Meteorological Department has predicted worsening weather in some states starting Friday. The Meteorological Department announced on Thursday that another low-pressure area is expected to form in the same region within the next 24 hours, which could lead to heavy rainfall in southern districts on February 21 and 22. A yellow alert has also been issued for this purpose.
According to the IMD, an upper atmospheric cyclonic circulation persists over the equatorial Indian Ocean and southeast Bay of Bengal, extending up to 5.8 kilometers above sea level. Under its influence, another low pressure area is likely to form over the same region during the next 24 hours, and then move westward and northwestward. This could lead to light to moderate rainfall at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal region on February 20.
Winds will blow at speeds of 30 to 40 kmph.
The Meteorological Department has stated that on February 21st, moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds of 30 to 40 kmph, is expected at isolated places. Heavy rainfall is expected in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, and Theni districts, where a yellow alert has been issued. On February 22nd, isolated heavy rainfall is also possible in Dindigul, Madurai, and Theni districts, where a yellow alert will remain in effect.
According to the Meteorological Department, some areas of northern Tamil Nadu may experience haze or light fog on the mornings of February 20th and 21st. The sky will be partly cloudy in Chennai city and surrounding areas. Dry weather is expected, with no rain expected. However, light haze or fog may occur in the morning.
