IMD Weather Alert: North India is experiencing unusually warm weather in early March, with temperatures reaching normal levels for late spring. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that maximum temperatures in large parts of northwest and adjoining central India will remain significantly above normal until next week, signaling the onset of intense summer-like heat.
The IMD stated in its weekly bulletin that maximum temperatures in many parts of northwest India are likely to be 4-6 degrees Celsius above normal, while in adjoining central India, temperatures may be 3-5 degrees Celsius above normal on most days of the week.
Delhi-NCR is likely to experience hot and dry weather.
The weather in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) is expected to remain clear for the next few days.
According to the IMD forecast, the maximum temperature in Delhi is likely to be between 33-35 degrees Celsius from March 6 to 8, while the minimum temperature may remain between 15-18 degrees Celsius.
Both day and night temperatures will be above the seasonal average. According to the IMD, winds will be light during the afternoon and will blow from the west and northwest directions, which will calm down by evening.
Pre-season heatwave in North and Central India
According to data shared in the IMD bulletin, many areas are already recording temperatures above normal.
In the past 24 hours, maximum temperatures ranged from 37-40 degrees Celsius in parts of western Rajasthan, Gujarat, Vidarbha, Marathwada, Odisha, and interior Telangana, with Jharsuguda in Odisha recording the highest temperature of 39.6 degrees Celsius in the plains.
The weather department reported that temperatures in several regions, including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, western Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, were 4-8 degrees Celsius above normal, reflecting the intense heat of the early season.
Western Disturbance Brings Rain to Mountainous Areas
Despite the increasing heat in the plains, the weather in the Himalayan region may soon change.
According to the IMD, a new western disturbance is likely to affect the western Himalayan region in the coming days. Under its influence, Jammu and Kashmir may experience light rain or snowfall between March 6 and 11, while Himachal Pradesh may experience rainfall between March 7 and 11.
The IMD stated that Uttarakhand may experience scattered rain or snowfall between March 8 and 11.
Thunderstorms likely in eastern states
Inclement weather may also occur in parts of eastern India. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds of up to 30-40 kmph are likely in sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim between March 8 and 11.
According to IMD, rain is likely in Odisha on March 8-9, Jharkhand on March 9 and Bihar around March 11.
