Imran Khan: The troubles of former Pakistan Prime Minister and PTI founder Imran Khan continue unabated. On Saturday, a Pakistani court sentenced Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years of rigorous imprisonment each in the ‘Toshakhana-2’ corruption case. The verdict was announced inside Rawalpindi’s high-security Adiala Jail, where Imran Khan is already lodged.
Hefty fines imposed along with prison sentences
Special court judge Shahrukh Arjumand announced the sentences in this case. The court prosecuted both of them under various sections of the law. A 10-year sentence was imposed under Section 409 (criminal breach of trust) of the Pakistan Penal Code. A further 7-year sentence was imposed under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The court also imposed a hefty fine of ₹10 million each on Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi.
What is the ‘Toshakhana-2’ case?
This entire case concerns valuable gifts received by Imran Khan from foreign heads of state while he was Prime Minister. According to the investigation, during an official visit to Saudi Arabia in 2021, Imran and his wife received a very expensive Bulgari jewelry set as a gift. It is alleged that instead of depositing this set in the government treasury (Toshakhana), Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi illegally withheld or sold the set, understating its value significantly below the official valuation.
Imran Khan has been imprisoned in Adiala Jail for years.
Pakistan cricket team captain Imran Khan was once considered the country’s most popular leader. However, since being removed from power through a no-confidence motion in April 2022, he has been fighting a continuous legal battle. Imran Khan was first arrested in May 2023. He was then detained again in August 2023 in connection with the Toshakhana case and has been held in Adiala Jail ever since. The manner in which Imran Khan is being held in prison has drawn international criticism. Several human rights organizations, including the United Nations (UN), have questioned the conditions of his detention.
A major blow to the PTI
Amid the impending political turmoil in Pakistan, Imran Khan’s long sentence is a major blow to his party, the PTI. Imran Khan has always described these cases as “politically motivated,” but this latest court decision has dashed his hopes of returning to electoral politics.
