Wedding season is in full swing in India these days. Every household is filled with excitement, with preparations, guest lists, gifts, and rituals. But there’s one question that most people overlook: How much cash is appropriate to accept as a wedding gift? If you don’t know these rules, a happy occasion could turn into a tax penalty. Therefore, it’s crucial to understand the Income Tax Act’s rules regarding wedding gifts, especially cash gifts. Even a small mistake can result in a hefty fine.

How much tax are wedding gifts?

According to the Income Tax Act, any gift received by the bride and groom at a wedding, whether cash, checks, jewelry, or property, is completely non-taxable. Wedding gifts are not considered income, and therefore, are not taxable. However, this doesn’t mean you can accept any amount of cash. There is a separate limit on cash gifts.

What are the rules for cash gifts?

According to the Income Tax Act, you can accept cash gifts at a wedding, but you cannot accept more than ₹2 lakh from one person in a single day. If a relative or friend gives you more than ₹2 lakh in cash, it would be a direct violation of the rules.

What happens if you accept more than 2 lakh rupees in cash?

If you exceed this limit, you will be fined heavily. The penalty will be equal to the amount of cash you violated. For example, if someone gives you 3 lakh rupees in cash, you will be penalized for 3 lakh rupees only. This penalty is imposed under Section 269ST. Therefore, caution is essential when accepting cash at a wedding.

What is the method for accepting more than 2 lakh rupees?

If someone wants to gift you an amount exceeding 2 lakh rupees, do not accept it in cash. You can accept the amount via check, RTGS, NEFT, IMPS, or any online transfer. This way, you will receive a large sum of money and avoid penalties.
