Income Tax Department has warned taxpayers, especially senior citizens, to be vigilant. Fraudsters are now using fake emails, fake SMS, and fake websites to steal personal and financial information. In an official message on X, the department advised taxpayers to personally verify the authenticity of any message or website claiming to be from the Income Tax Department. Fraudsters are now attempting to defraud people by creating fake sender IDs, misleading links, and websites that appear to be genuine. Their goal is to steal sensitive information such as PAN numbers, passwords, and OTPs.
Follow the official website and security rules
The Income Tax Department has advised taxpayers to use tax-related services only on the official website, https://www.incometax.gov.in. Do not trust any other website that vaguely resembles the official website—such as “efiling” or a site with a modified spelling. The department’s message is to “act wisely.” He has clarified that the Income Tax Department never asks for your OTP, password or other personal information through email, SMS or phone call.
Taxpayers should always carefully check the sender’s email address and website name before clicking on any link. If you find something suspicious, do not click on it. The Income Tax Department has urged all citizens to report such suspicious activity. If you receive a phishing email, send it to webmanager@incometax.gov.in and a copy to incident@cert-in.org.in, the national cyber security agency. You can also contact the Income Tax Department’s official helpdesk at 1800 103 0025 or 080 46122000 for assistance.
