Indian Railways: People often book train tickets with great anticipation to travel home for the holidays. However, upon chart preparation, they discover that the ticket is still stuck in waiting or RAC. In such a situation, people assume that they will travel soon, and they will either have to cancel their trip or stand in the train. However, railway rules state that vacant berths can be found on trains even after the chart is prepared. Most people are unaware of this, but you can still get a seat on a train even after waiting.

Vacant berths appear after the chart is prepared on IRCTC.

IRCTC’s app and website have a very useful option where you can see in real time which vacant seats are available on your train. You can even find a seat after the chart is prepared. After the chart is prepared, if you enter the train number, a coach-wise list of vacant berths and the remaining seats is displayed. Sometimes, passengers with confirmed tickets don’t travel at the last minute. Their seats remain vacant even after the chart is prepared and start appearing in the system.

Talking to the TTE also pays dividends.

After the train departs, the TTE has a complete list of who boarded which seat and who didn’t. If your ticket is on RAC or waiting list, it’s best to politely ask the TTE as soon as you board the train. According to railway rules, if a berth is vacant and a passenger doesn’t board, the TTE can offer it to another passenger. This process is often based on a first-come, first-served basis.
