Lower Berth Rules in Trains: Railways has automatically prioritized lower berths for senior citizens, women over 45, and pregnant passengers. Learn the full story.
Lower Berth Rules in Train: Millions of people travel by train every day in the country. The Railways constantly adds amenities to make their journey easier. The Railways has made a significant change to provide more convenience during travel, especially for senior citizens, women over 45, and pregnant passengers. Previously, forgetting to select a lower berth when booking a ticket could make the journey difficult.
Because climbing up isn’t easy for everyone. Now, the system has been made so smart that if you fall into these categories, the lower berth will automatically be reserved for you, provided there’s a vacant seat. This will not only increase comfort but also eliminate the hassle of constantly changing seats during the journey. Learn how this works.
Who will receive lower berths for senior citizens?
The Railways has prioritized three categories of passengers for this new facility. First, senior citizens, for whom climbing upstairs can be challenging. Second, women over 45 years of age, who find lower berths more convenient on long journeys. Third, pregnant women, for whom accessing middle or upper berths is difficult. The system will automatically attempt to assign lower berths to these three passengers upon booking. If a lower berth is not available at the time of booking, the TTE will allot them a vacant lower berth on the train.
How many lower berths are reserved in different coaches?
According to the Railway Ministry, a certain number of lower berths are pre-reserved in each coach. In Sleeper, approximately six to seven lower berths are reserved exclusively for this category. In Third AC, four to five lower berths are reserved, and in Second AC, three to four lower berths are blocked separately. These seats are directly allocated to senior citizens, women over 45, and pregnant passengers on priority basis. This means the system prioritizes their needs first and then accommodates other passengers.
Special Arrangements for Disabled Passengers and Accompanying Persons
The Railways already maintains a separate quota for disabled passengers, and this has now been further clarified. A total of four seats are reserved for this category in Sleeper and Third AC, including two lower berths. Four seats are also reserved for them in 2S and Chair Car. The accompanying attendant is also given a seat, ensuring a hassle-free journey. If a lower berth is available on the train, it is first allocated to senior citizens, disabled passengers, and pregnant women.
