For almost 75 years, people travel for free by this train. The name of this train is Bhakra-Nangal train.

Free travel for 75 years

The Bhakra-Nangal train running on the border of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab has been providing fare-free travel to people for the past 75 years. Passengers do not need tickets for the train running between Nangal and Bhakra. The coaches of this train are made of wood. There is no TTE in this train. This train runs on a diesel engine.

Who drives this train?

The control of this train is with the Bhakra Beas Management Board. This train has only 3 bogies, out of which one bogie is reserved for tourists and one bogie is reserved for women. About 50 liters of diesel is spent daily to run the train. This 13 km rail journey is very beautiful.

Specialty of Bhakra-Nangal train

Bhakra Nangal Dam is known as the highest straight gravity dam. Tourists come from far and wide to see this dam. The route of this train has been made by cutting the mountains. On the way, it passes through the Sutlej river and not the mountains. It covers a distance of 13 kilometers through the Shivalik hills.

Why did it start

This train was started in the year 1948 to see the Bhakra Nangal dam. It was started mainly to bring and take the dam’s employees, laborers, machines. Later it was opened for tourists as well. Tourists coming to see the Bhakra Nangal dam can travel by this train without ticket, without fare. Due to the loss incurred by this fare-free train, it was decided to close it in the year 2011, but later it was decided to run it as a heritage and tradition.
