Post-Study Work Visa: Students in New Zealand are given the option of employment to gain work experience. They receive a work visa for this purpose.
Work Visa For Students: New Zealand has announced plans to increase post-study job opportunities for foreign students, including Indians. Immigration New Zealand has announced plans to introduce a new short-term graduate work visa and expand the conditions for post-study work visas. The aim is to meet the country’s workforce needs through work visas granted to foreign students. Till now, only Bachelors and Masters students are granted post-study work visas in New Zealand. Only in some cases, students with certificates and diplomas get visas.
The government has stated that this plan will help foreign students find jobs more easily after graduation and meet the country’s needs. Officials say that the new provisions are expected to retain skilled foreign students in the country, while maintaining the country’s education standards. A large number of Indian students are currently studying in New Zealand. If you are also planning to study in New Zealand, you too can benefit from this.
What is a Short-Term Graduate Visa?
The proposed new Short-Term Graduate Visa will be introduced by the end of 2026. This visa will grant international students open work authorization for up to six months. This means students will be able to search for a job on their own. If they find a job during this time, they can then obtain a company-sponsored work visa. To qualify for this visa, students must have qualifications at Level 5 to 7 according to the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework. This includes certificates, diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, graduate certificates, and graduate diplomas.
Level 5 to 7 programs must be studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks. They must not be English language, foundation courses, or bridging qualifications. Most certificate courses are typically taught over 24 weeks, or six months. When applying for the visa, students must prove they have $5,000. This visa can be applied for within three months of the expiration of the student visa. This visa also allows students to work under an employment contract.
Post-Study Work Visa Requirements Expanded
The government has also extended the requirements for post-study work visas. From the end of 2026, students who have completed a Level 7 Graduate Diploma will be allowed to apply for a work visa. They simply need to prove they also have a Bachelor’s degree. This will be valid regardless of whether the degree is from New Zealand or another country. Applicants must complete the diploma in New Zealand and submit their Bachelor’s degree at the time of application. Diploma holders will receive a work visa for the same period as their diploma.
