IndiGo flight tickets: The fuel crisis has worsened due to Iran’s ongoing war with the US and Israel, which has also affected aviation fuel. Amid the sharp rise in aviation fuel prices, IndiGo on Friday announced a fuel charge of ₹425-₹2,300 on domestic and international flight tickets from March 14th. This move by IndiGo will result in an increase in airfares. The airline said in a statement that the fuel charge will be ₹425 for domestic flights and within the Indian subcontinent, while it will be ₹900 for flights to West Asia. The fuel charge for flights to Southeast Asia and China, Africa and West Asia will be ₹1,800, while for flights to Europe, it will be ₹2,300. Aviation fuel fuel (ATF) accounts for approximately 40 percent of an airline’s operating expenses.

What did IndiGo say?

The company stated that ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia have led to a sharp increase in ATF prices, and hence, the fuel charge has been imposed. The airline stated that if the full impact of the increased fuel prices were passed on to ticket fares, fares would have to be increased significantly. Therefore, a relatively small fuel charge has been imposed to reduce the burden on passengers. Earlier, on March 10, Air India and Air India Express had also announced a fuel surcharge on tickets.

What did Air India announce?

Air India and Air India Express have implemented a fuel surcharge of ₹399 on every domestic flight ticket, effective March 12. Fuel surcharges have also been increased for international flights.

The new surcharge system will be implemented in a phased manner. In the first phase, a fuel surcharge of ₹399 per ticket will be applicable on domestic and South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) flights from March 12. The airline stated that the surcharge will be $10 for flights to West Asia, $90 for Africa, and $60 for Southeast Asia. All these changes are effective from March 12, including flights to Singapore. Currently, there is no fuel surcharge on Singapore services.

What did the airline say?

IndiGo Airlines stated that a significant change in fares would be required to offset the full impact of this increase in fuel prices, but considering the additional burden on passengers, the airline has decided to implement a comparatively lower fuel charge.
