IPL 2020: Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting admitted that chasing the target remains a concern for his team and if he has to win the next two matches to reach the Indian Premier League playoffs after losing three consecutive matches. So it will have to be rectified immediately.
After a great start, Delhi have lost three matches in a row and on two of these occasions it failed to achieve the target. These include the defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Tuesday. He is currently ranked third in the IPL table.
Ponting told the press conference after the match, “It is a matter of concern.” When we decided to bowl first, we let them score big. We have to show better game in it. We need to bowl well while bowling first and perform better while chasing the target as it has not been favorable to us so far.
Delhi Capitals now have to face the top-ranked Mumbai Indians in the table and second-placed Royal Challengers Bangalore. Ponting said, “We had an idea from the beginning of the tournament about how many points are needed to qualify.” We won seven wins quickly and now lost three consecutive matches. We must regain the rhythm of victory.
He said, we will play our last two matches against Mumbai and Bengaluru and if we play the way we are playing now, then it will be difficult for us to win these two matches. So we have to change things as soon as possible. Wriddhiman Saha went for the top order in place of Johnny Bairstow and hit a blistering 87 off 45 balls for the Sunrisers and Ponting said he was surprised by the wicketkeeper batsman’s innings.
Ponting said, “We knew that Kane Williamson could return and Bairstow would have to sit out which meant Saha would return as wicketkeeper.” We discussed it in the morning how to play against Saha and Kane.
He said, Saha batted excellently today. He actually surprised me a little bit. I know he is a dangerous player but he came back after a long time and played a great innings. His innings made a difference in the match.
