ITR deadlines and refund delays will be eliminated; Budget 2026 may bring relief to taxpayers.

Union Budget 2026: Taxpayers are annually troubled by extended ITR deadlines and delayed refunds. Ahead of Budget 2026, tax experts are calling for permanent solutions to these problems. These include setting a fixed date for ITR filing and creating a real-time tracking dashboard for refunds. Deloitte India has suggested providing information on refund status, estimated timelines, and an option to file complaints on the CBDT portal, which would increase transparency and reduce taxpayer stress.

New Delhi | The annual extension of the Income Tax Return (ITR) filing deadline and the long wait for refunds are the two issues that bother ordinary taxpayers the most. Ahead of Budget 2026, tax experts are now demanding permanent solutions to both issues, so that the tax system can become more clean, reliable, and stress-free.

As the Union Budget 2026 approaches, discussions about income tax reforms have intensified. Repeatedly extending the July 31 ITR deadline not only creates confusion but also increases unnecessary pressure on taxpayers at the last minute. Tax experts believe that a fixed and permanent date could largely alleviate this problem.

Why is a fixed ITR filing date necessary?

Tax experts say, “The extension of the July 31st deadline every year confuses taxpayers. Permanently moving it to August 31st will not only improve compliance but also reduce stress. Experts believe that a fixed ITR due date will make it easier for salaried individuals, freelancers, and small businesses to plan ahead.

Concerns about refunds, demand for tracking system

When will the refund arrive after filing an ITR? This question is on almost every taxpayer’s mind. In light of this, Deloitte India has made a key suggestion for Budget 2026-27. The company recommends the introduction of a real-time refund tracking dashboard on the Income Tax Portal.

According to Deloitte’s proposal, there should be a separate dashboard on the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) portal, clearly displaying each stage of the refund. It should also show statuses such as “Under Processing,” “Approved,” “Transferred to Bank,” and “Credited,” along with an estimated timeline.

In addition, there should be a “Raise Concern” option so that taxpayers can directly lodge complaints in case of delays. They should receive updates through SMS and email alerts.

What are the expectations from Budget 2026?

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget 2026 on February 1, 2026. This will be her ninth consecutive budget. Taxpayers are hopeful that this budget will take concrete steps to address reforms such as extended ITR filing deadlines and faster refunds.
