ITR Refund Delay: After filing your Income Tax Return (ITR), most taxpayers experience real relief when the refund is credited to their bank account. However, many are having to wait a long time for this relief. Many taxpayers’ returns show as processed, but their bank accounts are still empty. They haven’t received their refunds. This is largely due to system-detected deduction errors, income mismatches, or tax notices. If you’re also worried about delayed ITR refunds, there’s no need to panic. Find out where you can complain here.
First, check your refund status
Before taking any action, it’s important to know where your refund is stuck.
To do this, log in to the Income Tax website, incometax.gov.in.
Go to e-File, then Income Tax Returns and select View Filed Returns.
Now check the status for the relevant assessment year (e.g., AY 2025-26).
If the status is “Processed with Refund Due,” it means the refund has been approved, but the funds haven’t been transferred. If it says “Refund Failed,” it means there’s a bank-related issue. If the refund is shown as “Paid,” but the funds haven’t been received, it means the transaction is stuck on the bank’s side.
Know who to call?

If the refund is listed as Paid on the portal but the money hasn’t been credited to your account, contact SBI.
Toll-free number: 1800 425 9760
Email: itro@sbi.co.in
You may be asked for your PAN and assessment year information.
3. Talk to the Assessing Officer
If the refund is due to scrutiny, old tax dues, or adjusted under Section 245, the CPC or SBI will not be able to help. In such a case, you will need to contact your jurisdictional Assessing Officer (AO). You can access your AO’s information by logging in to the portal and using the Know Your AO option.
How to File a Grievance Online
Talking over the phone can sometimes be difficult. In such a situation, the most reliable method is to file a grievance online.
Log in to the Income Tax Portal.
Go to the Grievances section and select Submit Grievance.
Select CPC-ITR under Department.
Select ‘Refund not received’ under Category.
Enter your Acknowledgement Number and date in the details.
The advantage of this is that the department is required to respond within a stipulated time, and you can escalate the complaint. Sometimes, refunds get stuck due to minor errors. Fix these two mistakes yourself first.
1. Bank Account Validation
Refunds are credited only to bank accounts linked to and validated by your PAN. Go to My Profile and check “My Bank Accounts.” Ensure the account is showing “Validated and Eligible for Refund.”
2. Old Tax Dues
If you have outstanding tax or penalty dues from a previous year, the new refund can be adjusted there. Go to “Pending Actions” and select “Response to Outstanding Demand.” This is where you must accept or reject the outstanding amount.
