ITR-U filing: CBDT launched ITR-U filing facility for these taxpayers, know who can file returns

CBDT has introduced the facility of ITR-U (Updated Return) for ITR-3 and ITR-4 taxpayers. Now you can file or correct returns within 48 months (4 years) for FY 2021-22 and 2022-23. This facility is for those who did not file returns or filed them incorrectly. Penalty may be levied on late filing.

ITR-U filing via ITR-3 and ITR-4 forms: There is good news for taxpayers falling in ITR-3 and ITR-4 categories. If you fall into these two categories and have not been able to file returns during the financial years 2021-22 and 2022-23 or have made any mistake in it, then you have a chance to correct it or file it. The Central Board of Direct Taxes i.e. CBDT has started the facility of filing updated Income Tax Return (ITR-U) through ITR-3 and ITR-4 forms on the e-filing ITR portal for these two financial years. Giving a big relief to the taxpayers, the central government had increased the period for filing updated returns (ITR-U) from 2 years to 4 years. That is, now you can correct your return till 2025 for the financial years 2021-22 and 2022-23.

What is ITR-U?

ITR-U is an updated income tax return, which you can fill to correct mistakes. According to Budget 2025, now the time for filing returns has been increased from 24 months to 48 months i.e. 4 years. That is, if you did not file the return earlier or filled it wrongly, then you can correct it during this period.

Who can file ITR-3 and ITR-4?

ITR-3 is for those whose income is from business or profession. If you have income from business along with salary, house rent, capital gains or other income, then you will file ITR-3. ITR-4 is for those businessmen and professionals whose annual income is less than Rs 50 lakh. If you pay tax under presumptive tax or you have income like salary, rent of one house and interest, then you can file ITR-4.

Who can file ITR-U?

  • Taxpayers who have not filed returns earlier can file ITR-U.
  • Those who had filed returns but there is some mistake in it.
  • You can update your return within 48 months. That is, those who have to file returns in AY 2025-
  • 26 can file ITR till 31 March 2030.

What is the last date?

The last date for filing ITR-U is 48 months after the end of the financial year. For example, if you have to file returns for 2025-26, you can file ITR-U till 31 March 2030. According to a report by ET, if you do not file ITR-U on time, you may have to pay additional tax and penalty. The later you file, the higher the penalty will be. The new facility of ITR-U will give taxpayers a chance to correct the mistakes. If you have not filed the return earlier or have filled it wrongly, then you can also correct it.
