KMA Allowance Hike: Navratri brings great news for millions of Indian Railways’ running staff (loco pilots and guards). Following the implementation of a 50% increase in dearness allowance (DA), the Railway Ministry has now granted in-principle approval for a 25% increase in the Minimum Guaranteed Kilometer Allowance (KMA). This claim was made by Shiv Gopal Mishra, General Secretary of the All India Railwaymen’s Federation (AIRF). He confirmed this approval from the Railway Ministry, calling it the result of the long struggle and solidarity of railway employees.

According to him, he recently met with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav and raised this issue prominently, to which the Railway Minister took a positive stance and assured him of issuing an order soon.

This decision will significantly increase the monthly income of running staff. According to railway regulations, when DA crosses a certain threshold (50%), a demand for revision of allowances arises, which the government has now accepted.

KMA: What is Kilometer Allowance?

The full form of KMA is Kilometer Allowance. This allowance is given to employees deployed on train running duties. Since running staff are required to travel continuously during their duties, they do not receive a Daily Allowance (DA) like ordinary employees. To compensate, they are paid a fixed amount for every 100 kilometers traveled. This also includes a Minimum Guaranteed Mileage (KMA). Even if a driver travels a very short distance on a particular day, they are still paid a minimum fixed kilometer (such as 120 or 160 km), which is called the Minimum Guaranteed Kilometer Allowance.

How much will the salary increase?

An increase in KMA, or kilometer allowance, will certainly result in an increase in salary, although it is not certain how much the increase will be. The total salary increase will depend on the number of kilometers the railway employee drives or the number of kilometers traveled by other running staff in a month. The potential increase calculated below is based on the 7th CPC. However, this is subject to change.

The order will be issued this evening or tomorrow.

It is believed that the Railway Board will issue an official order in this regard by this evening or tomorrow. AIRF General Secretary Shiv Gopal Mishra said in an X-post, “An important and much-awaited breakthrough has been achieved. Along with the 50% DA increase, a 25% increase in the KMA allowance for running staff has now been ensured. This long-standing, legitimate demand has finally been approved.” He described this victory as the result of AIRF’s continuous struggle, strong initiative, and the support of all of you colleagues.

He said, ‘Recently, during a meeting with both the Finance Ministry Secretary (EXPENDITURE) and the Railway Minister, I had again drawn their attention to this issue, after which they had said that the order would be issued soon. Now, as per the information received, its formal order from the Railway Board is likely to be issued late this evening or by tomorrow.’
