Ladki Bahin Yojana: Many ineligible people took advantage of Maharashtra’s Ladki Bahin Yojana, and the government is now taking strict action against them. The government has identified thousands of inappropriate beneficiaries and stopped payments to many accounts.
Ladki Bahin Yojana: While state governments are running numerous schemes for women, Maharashtra’s Ladki Bahin Yojana is gaining considerable attention. Its purpose is to provide monthly financial assistance to women from economically weaker sections. However, it was recently revealed that many people who were not eligible were also taking advantage of the scheme. Consequently, the government is now cracking down on such individuals.
Recovery to be made from ineligible individuals
The Maharashtra government stated that approximately ₹35 crore (approximately ₹350 million) under the Ladki Bahin Yojana was received by ineligible individuals, and this amount will now be recovered from them. According to data presented in the Legislative Council, 1,526 government employees were among those who received benefits worth ₹145 million.
Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare, in a written response to a question, said that officials have also identified 14,298 men who received benefits despite being ineligible.
Action initiated against government employees and men
The government has decided to initiate recovery proceedings against all men and government employees who illegally received these benefits. Departments have been directed to take action to recover the funds under the Maharashtra Civil Services Rules.
Over 2.6 million suspicious accounts
Earlier this year, an investigation led by the Information and Communications Technology Department identified 2.63 million accounts as potentially ineligible. These included families where more than one member was receiving benefits or the same individuals were also taking advantage of other schemes. In many cases, men had also applied for the scheme, even though it was specifically designed for women. Consequently, payments to all such accounts were stopped in June.
Which women are eligible for benefits?
The Ladki Behen Yojana covers married, widowed, divorced, abandoned, and economically disadvantaged women aged 21 to 65. Their family income must be less than ₹2.5 lakh per annum. If there is an unmarried woman in the family who is eligible for this scheme, she can also avail of this scheme. Beneficiaries are allowed to receive assistance from other schemes only if the total monthly assistance amount does not exceed ₹1,500.
Key Role in Elections
This scheme has also been a topic of discussion in Maharashtra politics. It is said that this scheme played a major role in the victory of the Mahayuti alliance in the 2024 assembly elections, and after the formation of the government, a major verification campaign was launched.
By February 2025, 5 lakh ineligible people, including those above the age limit, have been removed from the list.
