Whirlpool Layoffs: Whirlpool Corporation is laying off 341 employees at its refrigerator manufacturing plant in Amana, Iowa. The plant currently employs approximately 1,500 people. This is part of a larger modernization and restructuring plan. The job cuts will take effect on March 9th. The company says its multi-year transformation aims to update production lines and diversify the facility’s operations.

The Amana plant will continue to produce several refrigerator models under the Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, and Amana brands. However, some of its older refrigeration lines are being gradually retired. Whirlpool plans to repurpose the site for long-term sustainability by adding warehousing, parts production, and sub-assembly operations.

The company considers the Amana facility an essential part of Whirlpool’s US manufacturing footprint. The company says further investment is on the way as the site adapts to new production priorities. However, it cautions that rehiring is unlikely.

Which Workers Will Be Most Affected?

News of the layoffs has raised concerns among workers and community leaders in Iowa. The plant has long been a major local employer. It is expected that the layoffs will also impact surrounding towns that rely on its workforce. Workers most likely to be affected are union members with two to five years of recall rights.

For employees affected by the job cuts, Whirlpool has promised on-site human resource assistants, employee support programs, and access to Iowa workforce development resources, including guidance on unemployment benefits.
