LPG News: The government took a major decision on Saturday to further improve the supply of LPG. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued an order prohibiting certain individuals from obtaining new or refilling LPG cylinders. LPG Cylinders Refilled: The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has barred people with PNG (piped natural gas) connections from obtaining or refilling LPG cylinders. The ministry’s decision comes amid supply disruptions due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Iran’s conflict with the US and Israel has sparked global outrage and turmoil. To prevent misuse of subsidized LPG in households already equipped with PNG, and to improve distribution, the LPG Control Order was amended on Saturday.
What’s in the new supply order?
Under the new supply order, the government has barred oil companies from issuing new LPG connections or refilling LPG cylinders to people who already have access to the PNG network. Not only this, those having PNG connection will not be able to continue with LPG connection, that is, under the change, those houses which already have both PNG and LPG connections will have to surrender their existing LPG connection.
What is the current situation?
Two Indian-flagged LPG vessels have successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz and are heading towards India carrying approximately 92,700 tonnes of LPG. Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Special Secretary in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, stated that 24 Indian-flagged vessels are currently stationed in the Persian Gulf west of the Strait of Hormuz. Of these, the Shivalik and Nanda Devi vessels, carrying LPG, have safely transited the route and are expected to reach Indian ports soon. They are expected to arrive at Mundra and Kandla ports on March 16 and 17.
