Launched with the aim of reducing the financial burden on low-income families, this initiative will provide a subsidy of Rs 250 on LPG cylinder to the beneficiaries under Orunodoi Scheme and Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
LPG Gas Cylinder: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a major relief for families on Tuesday (December 2, 2025). He said that cooking gas at Rs 300 per cylinder will soon become a reality for millions of families in the state. This initiative, aimed at reducing the financial burden on low-income families, will provide a Rs 250 subsidy on LPG cylinders to beneficiaries under the Orunodoi Scheme and Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
In a post on the social media platform X, Sarma said, “Cooking gas at Rs 300 is no longer just a dream for millions of families in Assam, but will soon become a reality. Orunodoi families and PM Ujjwala beneficiaries in Assam will soon receive a Rs 250 subsidy on their LPG cylinders from the state government, making life easier for my family members.”
How to avail the benefits of this scheme
Official sources said that the subsidy will be provided directly to beneficiaries, further enhancing the existing central government assistance under the PMUY. This move is expected to benefit a large segment of economically vulnerable families, especially women, who are at the top of both the Orunodoi and PMUY beneficiary lists.
What is the purpose of this scheme?
The Orunodoi scheme, one of Assam’s signature welfare programs, currently provides monthly financial assistance to eligible families to meet essential expenses. By including the LPG subsidy in the scheme, the state government hopes to further reduce rising household expenses, especially as gas prices remain a concern for low-income groups.
When will this scheme be implemented?
This announcement is expected to provide relief to low-income people in rural and urban areas who rely on subsidized cylinders for their daily cooking needs. While the government has not yet announced a rollout date, officials have stated that modalities are being finalized for a smooth implementation. It is expected that LPG distributors will be thoroughly educated on the subsidy system, and the Social Welfare Department and the Food and Civil Supplies Department will coordinate the identification of beneficiaries and distribution of subsidies. With this initiative, Assam joins the growing number of states that are trying to protect people from fluctuations in gas prices by increasing LPG subsidies locally. This will further strengthen the government’s goal of “growth for all” and ensuring that benefits reach the right people.
