Lucknow-Bhopal Expressway: Travel between Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh is set to become faster, easier, and more affordable. Work is underway to connect Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, with Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh. The 600-kilometer-long Lucknow-Bhopal Expressway will reduce the travel time between the two cities to just seven hours. Currently, it takes 15-16 hours to travel from Lucknow to Bhopal by four-wheel drive. Work on this expressway is progressing rapidly. Once completed, people will be able to enjoy a fast-paced journey on this expressway in their own vehicles.
How will travel change?
According to reports, this expressway will connect three different highways.
Kanpur–Kabrai Highway
Kabrai–Sagar Highway
Sagar–Bhopal Highway
These will all be 4- to 6-lane highways and will provide high-speed connectivity to Sagar in Madhya Pradesh and then Bhopal via UP-Bundelkhand. According to officials, this expressway is being developed on the lines of the Yamuna Expressway. Under the project, a new 124-kilometer highway is being built from Nobasta (Kanpur) to Kabrai. A bypass is also being constructed in Kabrai to avoid heavy traffic from passing through residential areas.
When could the expressway open?
Although the government hasn’t yet announced an official timeline, various reports suggest that the Lucknow-Bhopal Expressway could be completed by the end of 2026 and is slated to open in early 2027. These dates haven’t been officially confirmed. The opening of this expressway will not only ease travel but also boost trade, employment, and the logistics sector in both states.
