“The Prime Minister is likely to launch an expanded scheme under the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme for people aged 70 years and above. This will benefit around six crore citizens from about 4.5 crore families,” the source told PTI.

Elderly will benefit

Every person aged 70 years or above is eligible to get an Ayushman card and can get free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh at any empanelled hospital under AB-PMJAY when the expanded scheme is launched. A total of 29,648 hospitals, including 12,696 private hospitals, have been empanelled under PMJAY as of September 1, 2024. The scheme is currently being implemented in 33 states and union territories except Delhi, Odisha and West Bengal. The source said that as per the age recorded in the Aadhaar card, any person aged 70 years or above will be eligible to apply for the scheme.
