Mahindra Thar OG Gets a Major Mechanical Overhaul: 8 Changes That Matter

Mahindra has reworked several fundamental parts of the Thar OG, bringing a stiffer platform, new rear suspension, electric steering, revised drivetrain hardware and more standard equipment.

The new Mahindra Thar OG may retain the unmistakable shape and character of the original Thar, but underneath the familiar body sits a substantially reworked mechanical package.

Instead of treating the update as a simple styling exercise, Mahindra has carried over technology from its newer SUV architecture and made changes to some of the Thar’s most important mechanical systems.

The result is a Thar with changes spanning the platform, suspension, steering, drivetrain, engines, braking hardware and safety equipment.

The SUV is priced from ₹10.32 lakh to ₹17.75 lakh (ex-showroom) and is available in LXT, AXT and ZXT variants with both rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive configurations. Deliveries are scheduled to begin on October 11.

Here are the eight mechanical and hardware changes that stand out.

1. The Thar Moves to the M_Glyde 4G Platform

One of the biggest changes is hidden beneath the body.

The Thar OG now uses Mahindra’s M_Glyde 4G platform, an architecture that first appeared on the Thar Roxx. The newer platform brings greater structural stiffness compared with the outgoing setup.

That matters because the platform forms the foundation for everything from suspension tuning to handling and off-road durability.

Although the Thar’s visual identity remains familiar, the underlying structure has therefore moved considerably closer to Mahindra’s newer-generation SUV hardware.

2. Rear Suspension Is Now Penta-Link

Mahindra has also replaced the previous rear suspension arrangement with a Penta-link setup featuring a Watts Link.

The configuration is shared with the Thar Roxx and Scorpio-N, giving the Thar access to a more sophisticated rear suspension layout.

The Watts Link helps control lateral movement of the rear axle while the multi-link arrangement provides greater control over wheel movement.

For an SUV designed to handle both rough terrain and everyday roads, this is one of the changes that could have a noticeable effect on the driving experience.

3. DAVINCI Adds Mechanical Damping Control

The suspension upgrade goes beyond the number of links.

The Thar OG gets DAVINCI damping technology with Frequency Dependent Damping. Unlike electronically controlled adaptive suspension systems, this setup works mechanically rather than relying on sensors and electronic actuators.

The basic idea is to allow the damping characteristics to respond differently depending on the frequency of suspension movement.

That gives Mahindra a way to balance road comfort with the control required when the SUV is driven over rough surfaces.

4. Electric Power Steering Replaces Hydraulic Assistance

The Thar OG becomes the first Thar to use electric power steering.

The older hydraulic arrangement has been replaced by an electrically assisted system.

This is a significant change because steering assistance affects both low-speed manoeuvrability and the overall feel of the vehicle.

Electric assistance can also make it easier for manufacturers to tune steering characteristics across different driving conditions while reducing the mechanical complexity associated with a conventional hydraulic setup.

5. The Differential System Has Been Updated

Another major change is found in the drivetrain.

Mahindra has moved to an electronically assisted locking differential, replacing the previous mechanical arrangement.

The Thar also gets dedicated Snow, Sand and Mud terrain modes, allowing the vehicle’s drivetrain behaviour to be adjusted for different surfaces.

There are additional Zip and Zoom drive modes, giving the driver further control over how the SUV responds.

For an SUV whose identity is closely linked to off-road driving, the changes to the differential and terrain-management system are particularly significant.

6. Engine Line-Up Continues With Multiple Powertrains

Mahindra continues to offer the Thar with different engine options rather than restricting buyers to a single powertrain.

The 2.0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol produces up to 160 bhp and 330 Nm, while the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel develops 150 bhp and 330 Nm.

There is also a 1.5-litre diesel engine producing 116 bhp and 300 Nm.

This gives buyers different combinations of performance and drivetrain configuration depending on the variant.

The continued availability of both petrol and diesel engines also keeps the Thar positioned as a relatively broad-use SUV rather than a single-purpose off-road model.

7. Four-Wheel Disc Brakes and Six Airbags Become Standard

Mahindra has also made changes that are less visible but important from a safety perspective.

The Thar OG now gets four-wheel disc brakes and six airbags across the range.

Higher-spec versions add further equipment, including TPMS and a rear-view camera on the ZXT variant.

Making the core braking and airbag package standard across the lineup means buyers do not have to move to the most expensive version simply to access the basic safety hardware.

8. Wider Track and Larger Wheels Change the Hardware Package

The mechanical changes are accompanied by revisions to the SUV’s stance.

The updated Thar has a wider track, while Mahindra has redesigned the bumpers and introduced larger wheels on higher variants.

The top versions use 19-inch alloy wheels, making them the largest wheels fitted to a Thar so far.

The wider stance and revised wheel package contribute to the updated appearance, but they also form part of the broader chassis and suspension changes made to the SUV.

What Has Actually Changed Under the Skin?

The important point about the Thar OG is that Mahindra has not limited the update to exterior styling.

Area Thar OG update
Platform M_Glyde 4G architecture
Rear suspension Penta-link with Watts Link
Damping DAVINCI with Frequency Dependent Damping
Steering Electric power steering
Differential Electronically assisted locking differential
Terrain management Snow, Sand and Mud modes
Drive modes Zip and Zoom
Brakes Four-wheel disc brakes
Safety Six airbags standard
Wheels Up to 19-inch alloys
Engines 2.0L petrol, 2.2L diesel and 1.5L diesel options

Why the Mechanical Changes Are Important

The biggest story with the Thar OG is not any individual feature. It is the extent to which Mahindra has updated the SUV’s underlying hardware while retaining its established identity.

The new platform, rear suspension and damping system address the vehicle’s structural and ride characteristics. Electric steering changes the way the SUV is controlled, while the revised differential and terrain modes focus on its off-road capability.

At the same time, standard six airbags and four-wheel disc brakes strengthen the equipment package.

In other words, the updated Thar is positioned as a more comprehensively re-engineered SUV rather than simply a refreshed version of the outgoing model.
