Medicine shops will have a special QR code and toll-free number, allowing you to lodge complaints immediately.

Soon, all retail and wholesale pharmacies in India will display a unique QR code and toll-free number. This isn’t for ordering or paying for medicines, but rather for reporting drug overdoses.

The government has introduced a new feature for smartphone users. Now, they will be able to report any side effects from any medication using their phones. Chemists across the country will soon see a special QR code displayed. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has directed drug licensing authorities in all states and union territories to install a special Quick Response (QR) code and toll-free number at all retail and wholesale pharmacies. Using this QR code and toll-free number, people can report side effects from medications directly from their smartphones. The CDSCO stated that this move will help the public and health professionals easily report drug interactions and adverse drug reactions through India’s indigenous PvPI Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring System. Let’s learn the full story.

The decision was taken during the 16th Working Group meeting

For your information, this decision was made during the 16th Working Group Meeting of the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India in June 2025. This means that by scanning the QR code, consumers and health professionals can directly report any adverse drug reactions, such as rashes, dizziness, swelling, nausea, or other serious complications, to the Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring System (ADRMS).

A QR code will be installed at every retail and wholesale pharmacy.

According to the CDSCO circular, all drug licensing authorities of states and union territories will have to ensure that this special QR code is displayed in every retail and wholesale pharmacy across the country at a place where it is visible to everyone.

This toll free number will also be available

Additionally, the circular states that the toll-free number 1800-180-3024 must be prominently displayed at pharmacy stores along with this QR code. The circular further urges that pharmacy stores immediately initiate action to implement these instructions in their jurisdictions. Please ensure dissemination among all licensees and strict adherence to these instructions to promote drug safety and protect public health.

What will be the benefit?

This new system will allow anyone to easily report adverse drug interactions. Previously, many people overlooked drug side effects or were unaware of how to report them. Now, by simply scanning a QR code with a smartphone or calling a toll-free number, they can report their concerns directly to the system. This information will help pharmaceutical companies and regulators monitor drug safety and take corrective action if necessary.

Good for both patients and drug manufacturers

This initiative is a significant step forward in drug safety in India. It will ensure that any potential drug risks are identified and addressed promptly. This will not only enhance patient safety but also improve drug development and use. This initiative will significantly contribute to India’s development of a strong drug safety system.
