In light of increasing complaints of adulteration in milk and dairy products across the country, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has made licensing mandatory for milk production and sale.

Now, no individual or organization will be able to trade in milk without proper registration or licensing.

Members of dairy cooperatives will not be required to obtain licenses, meaning farmers and livestock owners who are associated with a registered cooperative and supply milk to them will not need to obtain individual licenses.

To this end, FSSAI has issued an advisory to the State Food Commissioners of all states and union territories, warning of strict action for violations.

FSSAI stated that some milk producers and milk vendors are operating without registering themselves or obtaining a license. State Food Commissioners have been asked to strictly enforce the registration and licensing requirements.

It has directed the competent authorities at the Centre and states to direct food safety officers to verify that all milk producers and milk sellers possess valid registration certificates or licenses.

The authority also directed them to periodically inspect milk cooling equipment to ensure proper storage temperatures to prevent spoilage and protect public health.

FSSAI stated that violations of the regulations could lead to action. States have been directed to conduct special registration campaigns in their respective jurisdictions.

It is noteworthy that in December last year, state food commissioners were directed to regularly implement the special order for milk and milk products.

In view of the increasing complaints of adulteration in milk and dairy products across the country, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has made licensing mandatory for milk production and sale. Now, no individual or entity will be able to trade in milk without proper registration or license.
