Mumbai Local Trains Cancelled: Infrastructure work is underway on the Western Railway to increase local train capacity. This work is being carried out as part of the Kandivali–Borivali sixth line extension project, which began on December 20th and will continue until January 18th. Western Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Vineet Abhishek stated that an average of 70 to 80 local trains will be cancelled daily during this period.
He stated that due to major technical work such as line linking and electronic interlocking in Borivali, the number of trains cancelled on December 27th and 28th will be significantly higher, affecting 296 and 235 trains, respectively.
The railway official further stated that these works have been scheduled for the weekend to minimize inconvenience to passengers. Upon completion of the project, a dedicated track will be available for mail and express trains, and local trains will be able to run more frequently and on time.
Under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project, a separate sixth line is being laid to separate suburban and long-distance trains. Western Railway operates more than 1,400 suburban local trains daily between Churchgate and Dahanu, covering a distance of more than 125 kilometers.
Impact on Tourists
Tourists and outbound travelers coming to Mumbai for New Year celebrations (New Year 2026) may face significant inconvenience.
