Baggage Rules 2026: The Indian government has implemented new baggage rules for travelers arriving from abroad, effective February 2, 2026. Now, luggage worth up to ₹75,000 will be completely tax-free. Additionally, the rules for bringing jewelry have been eased, and significant relaxation has been provided in the weight limit for gold.
Baggage Rules 2026: The Indian government has implemented the “New Baggage Rules 2026” for passengers arriving from abroad. These rules, effective February 2, 2026, aim to simplify customs procedures at airports and avoid unnecessary hassles for travelers. Now, both Indian citizens and foreign tourists will enjoy greater baggage flexibility than ever before.
Significant Increase in Duty-Free Limit
The biggest good news under the new rules concerns the value of baggage. Now, travelers arriving from abroad can bring in luggage worth up to ₹75,000 without any customs duty (tax). Previously, this limit was only ₹50,000. This change is extremely beneficial for travelers who bring expensive gifts or essential items from abroad.
Gold jewelry will now be exempt based on weight.
If you are returning from a stay abroad for more than a year, the rules for bringing gold jewelry have been simplified. The new rules eliminate concerns about value and now consider only weight:
- Women travelers can now bring up to 40 grams of gold jewelry with them without paying any tax.
- The duty-free limit for men and children is 20 grams.
- You will not have to pay a single rupee of customs duty if you bring gold within this weight limit.
What will be the benefit of the new rules?
The government’s primary goal is to eliminate disputes and confusion at airports. The old rules required both weight and value to be considered, but now removing the value limit and placing only a weight limit will speed up the customs clearance process. This will save time for international travelers and improve their travel experience.
What is the duty-free limit on other items?
In addition to jewelry, limits have also been increased for other personal items (such as gifts or electronics).
