Not being informed about traffic challans in Delhi will now be a thing of the past. The Delhi Traffic Police have launched a new system to alert people about challans. Under this system, challans will now be sent to people in real time via WhatsApp messages.
New Challans System: If you haven’t received an SMS about your traffic challan, you’re not alone. This is one of the most common reasons for delays during Lok Adalat hearings, where people attempt to pay long-pending fines. But that could soon change as the Delhi Traffic Police have launched a system that will send real-time challan alerts via WhatsApp.
How will WhatsApp messages solve this problem?
Until now, vehicle owners received most e-challan notifications via SMS. E-challans are also uploaded to the Parivahan portal, which is linked to the mobile number registered in the vehicle database. If vehicle drivers don’t check the message or the portal, they learn about the fine when renewing their documents.
WhatsApp messaging is the solution to this problem. Now, whenever a vehicle is caught violating traffic rules, an e-challan with all the important details – the type of violation, date, time, location, and fine amount – will be sent directly to the vehicle owner’s WhatsApp account as an alert. People can also confirm and pay their fines through the Delhi Traffic Police website.
Why did the traffic police take this step?
Special CP, Traffic, Ajay Chaudhary, said, “Our aim is to make this system more transparent and convenient for everyone. We also urge people to update their mobile numbers on their RCs to receive information about violations.”
Officials believe that a better communication system will increase accountability among vehicle drivers and ensure timely payment.
A previous report by The Times of India states that nearly 98% of challans issued for traffic violations remained unpaid by the end of July this year. A total of 2,243,308 challans were issued between January 1 and July 31. Of these, only 55,075 were paid.
