Travelers New Rules: If you are a citizen of one of 85 countries, such as the United States, Canada, and France, and travel to the UK without a visa, starting February 25, 2026, you will need to obtain a new digital permit called an “Electronic Travel Authorization” (ETA). Without it, you will be denied entry into the United Kingdom. The British government has made this major change to make its borders smarter and more secure. They say this will prevent dangerous individuals from entering the country, but will also make travel easier for millions of good travelers.

A green light is now required before travel

This new rule states that from 2026, you will need to obtain this digital permit before boarding your flight. Previously, visa-free travelers could fly directly, but now the airline must ensure you have a valid eTA. If you don’t have this eTA, the airline will not allow you to board the plane. This means you will be denied travel before you even reach the UK border. On this, Immigration and Citizenship Minister Mike Tapp has said that this system will not only increase security but will also provide a smooth travel experience to millions of people.

Getting a permit is easy, but apply on time.

The good news is that the entire process for obtaining this permit is simple and online. You simply need to use the official UK ETA app and upload your required documents. You’ll need to pay a fee of £16 (approximately ₹1,800). While most people receive approval within minutes, the government recommends applying at least three days in advance to avoid any potential delays.

These people will get special exemptions

This new rule is not for everyone. British and Irish citizens are completely exempt from this rule. However, if you hold dual British citizenship, you are advised to always use your British passport to avoid travel difficulties. This system was gradually rolled out in October 2023, with over 13.3 million applications processed so far. From February 2026, it will become fully mandatory for all 85 eligible countries.
