This move is part of a broader initiative to curb road accidents and deaths. In the first six months of 2025, the city recorded 541 accidents, resulting in 223 fatalities. Drunk driving is a major cause of these accidents.
New Driving Rules: The Gurugram administration is now taking more stringent action against drunk drivers. If you’re found driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, your license could be revoked. Furthermore, repeat offenses could result in permanent license suspension. Such provisions already exist in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
According to a Times of India report, this move is part of a broader initiative to curb road accidents and deaths. In the first six months of 2025, the city recorded 541 accidents, claiming 223 lives. Drunken driving is said to be a major cause of these accidents. More than 5,000 challans were issued for alcohol-related offenses as of September, compared to 25,968 in 2024 and 5,181 in 2023.
According to the police, most drunk driving cases occurred near weekend party hubs like Sector 29, Cyber Park, MG Road, Golf Course Road, and 32nd Avenue. While police are regularly deployed in these areas—including Mall Mile, Ambience Mall, Galleria Market, and Sector 29 HUDA Market—it is now hoped that fines and license suspensions will act as a strong deterrent.
At a recent road safety meeting, Deputy Commissioner Ajay Kumar stressed the need for strict enforcement, saying, “License suspension rules already exist. These should be strictly enforced to curb drunk driving.”
According to Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act (MV Act), first-time offenders of drunk driving can face a fine of up to ₹10,000, six months’ imprisonment, or both. Repeating the offense within three years could result in a fine of ₹15,000 and imprisonment of up to two years, as well as permanent cancellation of their driving license. The district administration is also going to further tighten the process of issuing driving licenses. Deputy Commissioner DC Kumar said, “All SDMs should monitor the license issuance process in their areas to ensure compliance with safety rules.”
In addition to enforcement, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) directed departments to identify accident-prone areas and implement corrective measures. Initiatives taken to prevent accidents and improve visibility ahead of the winter season include:
➤Tree pruning.
➤Timely maintenance of T-junctions and U-turns.
➤Installing reflectors on major roads.
➤Awareness and constant monitoring
Public awareness campaigns are also a key component of this strategy. Kumar emphasized that understanding and following traffic rules can significantly reduce accidents. Police have been instructed to develop action plans targeting overspeeding and risky driving behavior, in addition to the ongoing campaign against drunk driving.
The administration also stated that enforcement of drunk driving laws has been irregular, mostly limited to weekends or special campaigns. Regular campaigns resumed in September 2022 after a gap of nearly three years, highlighting the need for sustained vigilance to ensure road safety.
