Nine regular domestic airlines currently operate in the country. Regional carrier FlyBig suspended regular flights in October. IndiGo and the Air India Group (Air India and Air India Express) hold over 90% of the domestic market.
Preparing to Fly in Indian Skies
Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu wrote on the social media platform Twitter on Tuesday, “It was a pleasure to meet the teams of new airlines Shankh Air, Al Hind Air, and FlyExpress, who are preparing to fly in Indian skies over the past week. Shankh Air has already received a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Ministry. Al Hind Air and FlyExpress received their NOC this week.”
He said the Ministry has been striving to encourage more airlines to enter the Indian aviation sector. He said that schemes like ‘UDAN’ have enabled smaller airlines like Star Air, IndiaOne Air, and Fly91 to play a vital role in regional connectivity within the country.
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, in addition to Air India, Air India Express, IndiGo, and the public sector Alliance Air, other airlines are Akasa Air, SpiceJet, Star Air, Fly91, and IndiaOne Air. Many airlines, including GoFirst and Jet Airways, have shut down their flight services in the last few years due to debt burden.
