New Flights: Air India has offered to operate 275 additional flights this month after the government imposed a 10% capacity cut on IndiGo. The Aviation Ministry is taking this step to balance routes during the busy travel season. The Tata Group airline has also sought clarification from the ministry on how long these restrictions will remain in place so it can plan its capacity accordingly.
What is the government’s plan?
According to a Times of India report, IndiGo operates flights on approximately 1,900 routes, at least 10% of which are being discontinued. The government plans to redistribute some of IndiGo’s routes among Air India, Air India Express, and Akasa. This will avoid inconvenience to passengers during the busy travel season and prevent any single airline from dominating the market.
SpiceJet also plans to add additional flights
Regarding the impact of IndiGo’s operations on the Indian aviation sector, SpiceJet has announced a significant expansion of its winter schedule. The airline plans to add 100 additional flights per day during this period, subject to regulatory approvals. This decision is based on growing and strong demand on key routes. IndiGo recently faced significant operational disruptions following the implementation of new pilot testing regulations.
