The government has clarified that new SIM-related rules for WhatsApp and other messaging apps will come into effect on March 1. Running the app without an active SIM may be difficult.
New government rule: If you’re a WhatsApp user, this news is useful. The central government has once again clarified that there will be no changes or relaxations to the SIM-Binding rule. This rule applies to WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal messaging apps, and aims to strengthen digital security. This rule will come into effect from March 1st, and companies will be required to comply. According to the government, these apps must remain continuously connected to an active SIM card to confirm that the number used for WhatsApp is genuine and active. If the SIM is removed or deactivated, the app’s services will no longer function on that device.
What is SIM-Binding?
The mobile number used to create your WhatsApp account must remain active on your phone. If that SIM is not in your phone or is disabled, WhatsApp will not function properly. Until now, messaging apps did not continuously check for SIM presence once you logged in by entering a 6-digit OTP. The new rule is set to change this. It will now be mandatory for the SIM to be active and present in the phone at all times. The government has made this change because it is focusing on preventing digital fraud, the misuse of fake numbers, and cybercrime. When every account is linked to a verified SIM, it will be easier to identify fraud and fake accounts.
No relaxation after March 1, 2026
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) issued the SIM-Binding rule on November 28, 2025, and companies have been given 90 days to complete it. This means that all messaging platforms will have to implement this system by March 1, 2026. The government has also clarified that the six-hour auto-logout rule will also apply to web or desktop users logged in on different devices. This means that if you’re using WhatsApp on a computer or web, you’ll have to re-login with a QR code every six hours.
This will impact the general public.
If your number is active and the same SIM is in your phone, you don’t need to worry too much. Your WhatsApp will continue to function normally. However, if you remove the SIM from your phone or insert it into another phone, your WhatsApp will become temporarily inactive. Furthermore, if your number is disabled (due to a failed recharge), WhatsApp may ask for re-verification or even shut down. The central government believes that if every account is linked to an active SIM, the fight against fake numbers, scams, and cybercrime can be more effectively fought.
